KUALA LUMPUR – Filipino equestrian Colin Syquia’s triumph atop Adventure E in the 29th SEA Games show jumping individual competition somehow pricked the hosts’ pride.
The Malaysian riders were a gold away from a six-gold sweep when Syquia and his champion mount stole the show, beating out two hometown bets for the championship at 3Q Centre in Rawang Monday.
Syquia completed his round in 37.63 seconds while Malaysian Sharmini Cristina Ratnasingham on Arcado L placed second at 41.30 and another home bet Qabil Ambak atop 3Q Qalisya came in third at 41.66.
Ratnasingham and Ambak were part of the Malaysian team that bested the Philippines for the gold in the team event earlier.
In their defeat in the individual event, the Malaysians offered an excuse – they were beat by a Grand Prix champion horse.
“Syquia’s horse is a Grand Prix winner and absolutely it was more experienced than our horses. Adventure E was fast,” said Ambak as quoted by the New Strait Times.
The Malaysians also won earlier the individual and team dressage and the endurance events.
Then they had to endure pain inflicted by the Filipino horseman.
