Man says in 911 call he woke from dream and found wife dead: ‘I think I killed her’

An aspiring pastor charged with murder in his wife’s death told a 911 operator that he woke up from a dream early Friday to find his wife stabbed and bloody on their bedroom floor.

Matthew Phelps told the operator he took more medicine than he should have and woke to find himself covered in blood and his wife dead in their Raleigh, N.C. home, according to a 911 call released by police, WTVD-TV reported.

“I think I killed my wife,” he said. “I had a dream, and then I turn on the lights, and she is dead on the floor.”

Raleigh police charged Phelps, 29, with murder in the death of his 29-year-old wife, Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps, AP reported.

According to police, Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps was found with stab wounds and taken to the hospital where she was proclaimed dead, the News & Observer reported.

“I have blood all over me, and there is a bloody knife on the bed, and I think I did it,” Phelps told the 911 operator.

The operator repeatedly asked Phelps whether his wife was breathing or may be alive. During the call, Phelps said he wasn’t sure how long she had been on the floor, saying “the blood is not wet on me, the blood is dry.”

Phelps sobs during the call and says “she didn’t deserve this.”

“I took more medicine than I should have,” he told the operator. “I took Coricidin Cough and Cold because I know it can make you feel good. A lot of times I can’t sleep at night. So, I took some.”

ABC reported that Phelps wanted to become a pastor, and his wife taught Sunday school.
